GROWING TIPS
To aid germination, use a file to nick Morning Glory’s hard outer seed coat and soak seeds overnight before planting. Sow outside after the last frost. Keep soil moist, but not soggy, until seedlings are established. Thin seedlings to prevent overcrowding. Morning Glories love to climb and the vines will climb up to 10 feet tall with support. Without support they’ll mound and spread up to 5 feet wide. Either way, heavenly blue trumpet blooms will burst throughout.
For earlier blooms, start Morning Glory indoors 6-8 weeks prior to the last frost. After there are two sets of true leaves, harden the seedlings for 1-2 weeks, and then transplant.
Beautiful to look at, most parts of the Morning Glory, including the seeds, are toxic if ingested.
Wit & Wisdom: If you’ve ever grown sweet potatoes, you may notice a resemblance between their leaves and flowers and those of the morning glory. Unsurprisingly, the plants are related; both belong to the genus Ipomoea. Read The Old Farmer's Almanac Morning Glories Growing Guide!
