GROWING TIPS
In mild climates plant in the fall for a summer harvest the following year. In cooler climates plant indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost date; and transplant outdoors when sprouts are 6-8 inches tall for a late summer harvest. Space seeds 3-6 inches apart and cover with about 1/3 inch of soil. Ensure soil is well drained and kept consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Harvest Red Creole Onions when tops begin to yellow and fall over. Bulbs will be 3-4 inches wide.
Before long term storage, clean excess dirt off of onions and cure by placing them in a warm, dry, well-ventilated area (such as a shed, greenhouse or garage). Check onions each day to ensure they aren't being exposed to too much heat or moisture. Cure for 2-4 weeks when skins will be dry and papery, leaves shriveled, and roots dry and wiry.
Short-Day Onions: Red Creole Onions are well adapted to short days and will begin to develop bulbs when the day length reached 10-12 hours. They thrive in greenhouses, gardens, raised beds, or pots; and store exceptionally well once harvested and cured.
Wit & Wisdom: Onions were worshiped in ancient Egypt, where their concentric circles were seen as symbols of eternal life. A raw onion rubbed on a bee sting or insect bite will relieve the pain and itching. Read The Old Farmer's Almanac Onion Growing Guide!
